St. Rita Hosts Mustangs for Mental Health Day with Lewis University

On January 17, the St. Rita Counseling Department teamed up with the Social Work and Counseling Staff at Lewis University for Mustangs for Mental Health Day for the student body.

Ritamen were provided opportunities throughout the day to participate, rotating through the different sessions. These sessions were put together by the Lewis University Social Work and Counseling staff to provide interactive ways for students to acquire tools for stress management, positive mental health tips, and self-care strategies.

“This program was an exciting new partnership for our department,” Jill Nagel, Director of Guidance shared. “We are always looking for new ways to emphasize the importance of taking care of your mental health to our Ritamen, dedicating this time really helped them to understand it in a new way.”

The sessions were designed to reach students in different ways. One session focused on the importance of self-care and wellness, also providing resources for suicide prevention. Another session provided a locker magnet activity encouraging positive self-talk and growth mindset, while emphasizing the importance of expression and creativity. The third session incorporated movement to help Ritamen notice stress in the bodies and provided strategies for grounding and self-regulation.

This experience was provided in the lead up to the “Laugh to Create Awareness” taking place at the Beverly Arts Center and three nationally known and rising comedians with roots in Chicago’s vibrant comedy scene, including Joe Kilgallon, Kayley Horton, and Calvin Evans.

Proceeds benefit Lewis University Center for Health and Counseling Services.
